South Africa has no shortage of smart city announcements. Johannesburg has published smart city frameworks. Tshwane has launched digital governance initiatives. Various private developments have marketed themselves as "future cities" with glossy renders of sensor networks and autonomous transport. Equinix met with Cape Town's economic development director three times between July 2025 and June 2026, confirming their intention to invest in data centres in Cape Town — with land already acquired at King Air Industria. Data centre infrastructure is the physical foundation of an AI economy — compute, cooling, power, and fibre. Cape Town is being chosen for all four reasons.
Cape Town launched Maya, an AI tool to help global investors do business in the city — a signal that the city is not just attracting investment passively but actively using AI to facilitate the investment process itself. That is a meaningful shift from a municipality producing PDF investment guides.
The South African AI Industry Association and Western Cape Government are creating a new AI cluster with an AI Factory — bringing together commercial, government, academic, startup, and NGO stakeholders to promote, coordinate, and share opportunities that translate into jobs, foreign direct investment, and regional economic growth.
Century City is not just adjacent to this — it is the kind of environment where these ambitions can demonstrate proof of concept. A precinct that already runs number plate recognition, real-time infrastructure monitoring, and a unified operations centre is a natural location for AI-augmented city management pilots. The infrastructure is already there. The data is already flowing.

That is the same principle that applies to business infrastructure. A company that builds its client portal, document management system, and automated workflows as integrated infrastructure from the start is in a fundamentally different position than one that tries to retrofit technology onto a process that was built for paper and email. The technology is not the constraint. The architecture is.
South Africa's AI data centre market is projected to grow from USD 70 million in 2025 to over USD 572 million by 2031, driven by major investments from Microsoft and Amazon Web Services in Gauteng and the Western Cape. AI only works properly when your underlying IT infrastructure is built to support it.
