Century City is different not because of its ambitions but because of its execution. Equinix meetings with City of Cape Town — data centre investment confirmed

Equinix met with Cape Town's economic development director three times between July 2025 and June 2026, confirming their intention to invest in data centres in Cape Town — with land already acquired at King Air Industria. Data centre infrastructure is the physical foundation of an AI economy — compute, cooling, power, and fibre. Cape Town is being chosen for all four reasons.

Cape Town launched Maya, an AI tool to help global investors do business in the city — a signal that the city is not just attracting investment passively but actively using AI to facilitate the investment process itself. That is a meaningful shift from a municipality producing PDF investment guides.

The South African AI Industry Association and Western Cape Government are creating a new AI cluster with an AI Factory — bringing together commercial, government, academic, startup, and NGO stakeholders to promote, coordinate, and share opportunities that translate into jobs, foreign direct investment, and regional economic growth.

Century City is not just adjacent to this — it is the kind of environment where these ambitions can demonstrate proof of concept. Cape Town's AI investment wave arrives
Equinix, AWS, and major technology investors confirm Cape Town data centre investments. The city launches Maya. The Western Cape AI cluster is announced. The Africa AI Summit confirms Cape Town as its November 2026 host. The infrastructure Century City built over a decade becomes relevant to a city-wide conversation.

What the smart city model actually teaches businesses

Century City's success as a smart city comes down to one thing: it was designed with integrated infrastructure from the beginning, not retrofitted with technology onto an existing environment. The fibre was laid when the buildings were built. The SOC was established as the precinct was being populated. The governance model — the CCPOA — was structured to make investment decisions possible rather than requiring consensus from hundreds of independent property owners every time a technology upgrade is needed.

That is the same principle that applies to business infrastructure.
